Why winter might be the best time to visit
Raglan is one of those places everyone’s heard about but not everyone’s actually been to. It’s just two hours from Auckland, but you’d be surprised how many people still haven’t made the trip!
Maybe they think it’s just a summer surf town?
Maybe they’re not quite sure what’s actually here?
Well if you ask any local—or anyone who’s visited even once—you’ll get the same answer: Raglan’s different. In a good way.
While we’re known for long summer days and a pretty legendary left-hand break, we believe that winter is when Raglan really shines.
There’s a calmness here in the cooler months. Fewer crowds, crisp air and a rugged coastline that is always impressive—just with a few more puffer jackets and a hot coffee in hand. It’s the kind of place where you can shake off the city without needing to plan a major expedition.
Got the weekend free? Here’s how it could look:
You roll into town on Friday night, settle in somewhere warm and local. Saturday morning you’re heading up Mt Karioi for sweeping views over the coast and rich farmland. Lunch is a bowl of something hot from one of the town’s cafés (we’ve got more than our fair share of good ones), then maybe an afternoon stroll through the artisan shops or a walk or cycle along the estuary track if you’re keen to keep moving. Enjoy a meal at one of Raglan’s buzzing local spots—wood-fired eats, share plates, good wine... and fresh, seasonal flavours served up with character. Sunday sees you wandering through native bush to Bridal Veil Falls—it’s a 20 minute drive on the way out of town, with the option of a quick walk to the lookout or a longer trail through the bush to the base of the waterfall.

And yes, the ocean’s still right there—ready for anyone keen to get amongst it. Paddleboarding, foiling, fishing—there’s no off-season here for those who love the water. But Raglan’s appeal goes well beyond the waves. The town has a thriving creative scene, with everything from pottery studios and art galleries to live music nights and exhibitions at the Old School Arts Centre. You’ll find independent shops filled with locally made goods, weekend markets and cafés that take their coffee seriously. It’s a place where people know their neighbours, kids bike to school, and small businesses are the heartbeat of the community. Some come for the surf, but many stay for the lifestyle—one that’s grounded, slower-paced, and deeply connected—to the land, the sea and each other.
That’s where Rangitahi comes in.
Rangitahi is Raglan’s largest property development, started in 2016. With a total of seven stages, we’ve welcomed all types of people who want to be part of the Raglan lifestyle. With two new stage releases on the way, there are still plenty of opportunities to make it yours.
At the Peninsula, we’ve got options for anyone who’s thinking a bit bigger than just a weekend getaway. There are titled sections ready to build on from $395k, if you're keen to design something from scratch—something that suits the way you live. Whether that’s a compact hideaway, a work-from-home retreat or a full family home. If you’re more of a 'lock up and leave' type, the Rangitahi apartments at West Village are a smart, low-maintenance option—you can come and go without worrying about lawns or gutters. And if you’re looking for more room to breathe, our next chapter, The Hideaway, offers larger sections with space to stretch out, still just a short stroll from the water.
At The Hideaway, you’ll find larger-than-average sections nestled between rolling farmland and the harbour’s edge—ideal if you’re after a bit more space and privacy. Whether you’re planning a forever home or a future-facing investment, this is a place where you can build something that works for you. Maybe that’s a warm, open-plan home that soaks up the afternoon sun, or a split-level layout that makes the most of the views. The sections are generous, the outlook is peaceful, and the potential is wide open.
So if you’ve been meaning to see what all the fuss is about, maybe this winter’s the time to do it. Pack your hiking boots, bring your raincoat, and come see what Raglan looks like when it’s not full of jandals and beach towels. You might just find it suits you even better.
